Deer Park Community Wood ProjectWe are now well into the development of Deer Park Wood following the granting of a licence by the owners, W.O.D.C. This is a very exciting project and will probably take about four years to plant with a selection of hedging, hardwood trees, woodland trees, and an orchard of fruit trees. A first for Witney, this land is now being managed by Witney Woodland Volunteers following an Agreement in August 2010 with West Oxfordshire District Council. Our approved plan is to manage and develop the land actively and to improve it as an environmental resource for the benefit of the wildlife and local residents. Improving the woodland will take many years, but you will see changes, with autumn mowing, litter picking, weeding out invasive plants and pruning shrubs and trees where needed. The objective is to create a natural woodland 'feel', not a sanitized parkland area with vegetation. Wildflower areas are being seeded, along with the planting of hundreds of additional hedging and specimen trees. Seating has been provided by the side of regularly mown grass pathways which will in time open up the densely wooded areas of the woodland for visitors to appreciate. A log seating area suitable for picnics offers an 'outdoor classroom' for local schools. Considerate dog walking is encouraged. There are many pictures of the wood on our gallery site here.
